Overview
Registered in 2004 by an unknown hybridizer, 'Academy Golden Papoose' is a medium-sized hosta distinguished by its blue-green leaves with gold margins and a prominent glaucous bloom on both surfaces. The ovate, moderately corrugated leaves measure 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) long by 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide, with 13 vein pairs and greenish yellow, slightly rippled margins.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a slow-growing, mound-like clump reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its relatively short scapes (11–12 inches / 27.9–30.5 cm) keep the light green flower stems low within the foliage. The compact, dense habit suits border fronts, rock gardens, or container plantings, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and take protective measures if necessary.
