Overview
Registered in 2003, *Hosta* 'Academy Fangorn Forest' is a medium-sized, upright, open clump-forming cultivar derived from a first-generation seedling of *H.* 'Ginko Craig'. Its most distinctive features are the heavily rippled, medium green leaf margins, a slightly shiny upper surface contrasted with a very shiny underside, and unusually colored reddish purple scapes that are often serpentine in form, accompanied by reddish purple pods.
In the Garden
*Hosta* 'Academy Fangorn Forest' is suited to partial to full shade, where its upright, open habit and lance-shaped leaves with tapered bases and moderate waviness create a textural accent. The medium green foliage with heavily rippled margins provides contrast against broader-leaved perennials such as ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Tiarella*. At maturity, the clump reaches approximately 33 inches (83.8 cm) in diameter and 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate that allows it to fill space without becoming invasive. Its upright form and moderate spread make it appropriate for the middle to front of a shaded border, and it can be grown in containers if provided with adequate root space and consistent moisture.
Care Notes
*Hosta* 'Academy Fangorn Forest' performs best in consistently moist, well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods, particularly in warmer climates. Standard hosta care applies: apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitoring and appropriate controls are recommended where these pests are prevalent. Hardiness is typical for the genus, suitable for temperate climates with winter dormancy.
