Overview
Registered in 1999 from unknown parentage, 'Academy Blue Titan' is a giant hosta cultivar distinguished by its intensely blue-green foliage with a heavy glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces and slightly rippled margins. The plant forms a substantial mound reaching 24 inches (61 cm) in height and 56 inches (142 cm) in diameter, with leaves measuring 13 inches (33 cm) long and 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) wide, each bearing 16 vein pairs and a cordate base.
In the Garden
This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue coloration is most pronounced and the glaucous bloom remains intact. With a moderate growth rate and mature dimensions approaching five feet in spread, it requires ample space and is well-suited as a specimen plant or for the back of a shaded border. The medium green scapes, reaching 21 to 26 inches (53 to 66 cm) in height, carry lavender flowers in midsummer and may be paired with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its substantial scale.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during establishment, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick, glaucous leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, though monitoring may be necessary in damp conditions; deer may browse the foliage in areas where they are present.
