Overview
Registered in 2008 by an unknown originator, 'Academy Blue Funnel' is a large hosta distinguished by its strongly vase-shaped habit, medium blue-green foliage, and prominent corrugation. The broadly ovate leaves, measuring 11 inches (27.9 cm) long by 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide, are moderately cupped and lightly twisted, with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces and 16 pairs of veins.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 46 inches (116.8 cm) and a height of 28 inches (71.1 cm), with an upright, moderate growth rate. It performs best in typical hosta-growing zones with partial to full shade, where its blue-green color and rugose texture are most pronounced. The medium green scapes, 19 to 26 inches (48.3 to 66.0 cm) tall, bear lavender flowers in midsummer; it pairs well with ferns or other shade perennials that complement its bold foliage.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry spells to maintain leaf turgor, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage the leaves, particularly in damp conditions, though the corrugated surface offers some resistance; deer are known to browse hostas and may require fencing or repellents.
