Overview

Registered in 2005, *Hosta* 'Academy Ametrine' is a large cultivar of unknown pollen parentage, with *H. 'Sum and Substance'* as the pod parent. It is visually distinctive for its broadly ovate, dull green leaves with heavily rippled, greenish-yellow to gold margins, and for producing pale purple flowers from white buds edged in purple.

In the Garden

'Academy Ametrine' forms an upright clump reaching 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and 31 inches (78.7 cm) in diameter, with individual leaves 10 inches (25.4 cm) long by 7 inches (17.8 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border. The gold-margined foliage provides contrast when paired with darker-leaved perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
