Overview

Registered in 2009 by K. Walek through the American Hosta Society, 'Abiqua Kaleidoscope' is a large hosta cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaf centers with chartreuse to golden yellow margins, which are bordered by a dark green edge approximately 1 inch (2.5 cm) wide.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature size of 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter and 21 inches (53.3 cm) in height, with a semi-upright growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-green hostas, and benefits from protection from afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch. Its large, broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases and light corrugation make it suitable as a specimen plant or in mixed shade borders, paired with ferns or astilbes.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. This cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
