Overview

Registered in 1988 by Walden West, this medium-sized cultivar produces rounded, heavily textured leaves with wide green margins and a distinct blue-green center. The leaf surface is flat and smooth, with 11 pairs of veins, and the plant forms a dense, symmetrical mound.

In the Garden

Reaching approximately 11 inches (28 cm) in height and 30 inches (76 cm) in diameter, 'Abiqua Blue Madonna' is well-suited for the middle of a shaded border or as a specimen in a woodland garden. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green leaf centers remain most pronounced. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials complement its form.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
