Overview

Registered in 2009 by K. Walek through the American Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'Abiqua Blue Hearts' is a small-sized cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its nearly round, deeply cupped, and heavily corrugated blue-green leaves with a glaucous bloom on the undersides. The foliage forms a dense, mound-like clump, with each leaf measuring approximately 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) long and 4 inches (10.2 cm) wide, bearing 10 to 11 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'Abiqua Blue Hearts' reaches a mature spread of 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter and a height of 12 inches (30.5 cm), with scapes rising to 18 inches (45.7 cm) in medium green. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, and is well-suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings due to its compact size. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other small shade perennials that complement its blue foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
