Overview

Registered in 1987 by Walden West, this small blue-green hosta cultivar produces compact mounds of powdery blue-margined leaves. Its most distinctive feature is the heavy blue bloom on the leaf margins, contrasting with the slightly greener leaf center, creating a subtle two-tone effect on the 4-inch (10.2 cm) long by 3.75-inch (9.5 cm) wide leaves.

In the Garden

'Abiqua Blue Edger' forms a dense, low clump reaching 9 inches (22.9 cm) in height and 20 inches (50.8 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as a groundcover in partial to full shade. Its small stature and compact habit also suit container plantings. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other small hostas with contrasting leaf colors.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. This cultivar shows typical hosta susceptibility to slugs and deer, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
