Overview
Registered in 2008 by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Abiqua Big Sky' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its intensely blue-green, heavily corrugated leaves with a glaucous bloom and slightly rippled margins. The ovate leaves, reaching 14.5 inches in length and 10.5 inches in width, are borne on an open, mound-like plant that attains a mature diameter of 34 inches and a height of 17 inches.
In the Garden
'Abiqua Big Sky' performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage retains its coloration and the glaucous bloom is not diminished by excessive sun. The plant's moderate growth rate and stately, arched appearance make it suitable as a specimen or as a focal point in a mixed shade border, where it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its giant size precludes container cultivation for most gardeners.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer deterrents may be necessary, as both pests are known to damage hosta foliage.
